Manual Sign
Manual Sign (MS) is a common first introduction to using AAC to enhance communication for individuals both with and without CCN.
MS is a combination of hand movements and poses that represent an expression, word, letter, number or combination of words. To use MS, the individual intentionally creates the sign with their hands in order to express themselves. The communication partner then needs to have the knowledge to understand and interpret the sign and react accordingly. MS can be modified for individuals with many different needs.
As there is no external equipment needed, MS can be easily personalised. This is done simply by being selective with the expressions, words and combinations of words that the individual learns so that it appropriately reflects their needs and environment.
